What Are Betting Lines?

Betting lines are essentially the prices set by bookmakers in order to determine how much money they will pay out if a bettor wins. Bookmakers create these lines based on a number of soccer betting factors such as team form, injuries, weather, and more. The betting line is what sets the stage for all other types of bets that can be placed on an event.

What Are Soccer Betting Odds?

Odds are simply the probability that something will happen. They are usually expressed in fractions or decimals such as 1/2 or 0.5, respectively. Odds represent how likely it is that a certain outcome will occur in any given game or match. Bookmakers use them to create lines and then adjust them depending on which team is favored before an event takes place.

For example, if Manchester United is favored to win against Chelsea then bookmakers would adjust their odds accordingly with MU having shorter (lower) odds than Chelsea. This means that if you bet on MU winning, you would receive less money than if you bet on Chelsea winning despite Manchester United being favored to win. How Do I Read Soccer Betting Lines & Odds?

To read them correctly, all you need to do is look at the numbers next to each team’s name or symbol (example: +1/-1). The number next to one team indicates how much they are favored while the number next to the other indicates how much they are not favored. So if Manchester United has +1 next to its name/symbol then it means that Manchester United is favored by one point over Chelsea (or vice versa).

Then look at the numbers after each team’s name/symbol—these indicate what your payout would be for a win or loss for either side based on your wager amount (example 2/1 or 2:1). For example, if your wager amount was $10 and Manchester United had odds of 2/1 then your payout would be $20 ($10 x 2) for a win and $10 ($10 x 1) for a loss since 2/1 = 2x$10 = $20 total return with $10 profit ($20 – $10).

Conclusion

Betting lines and odds may seem intimidating at first glance but understanding them isn’t as difficult as it seems! With our guide above, we hope we’ve helped demystify soccer betting lines & odds. Understanding soccer betting spreads will also help you  to place bets like an expert! Good luck!
